The SWEEPER-robot: Hands-free Production in High-Tech Greenhouses

In high-tech, large-scale greenhouse production, labour availability is becoming a major problem. Growers seek automated systems for time-consuming tasks like harvesting. Wageningen University & Research works on the future greenhouse with hands-free production. Decision support systems based on crop monitoring techniques as applied in f.i. precision spraying form the first step towards automated crop management. Robotic harvesting is the next step, in which vision techniques, mechatronic systems, machine-learning and artificial intelligence are used to actually touch and manipulate the crop. The SWEEPER robot demonstrated this year its capability to harvest sweet pepper in a commercial greenhouse.
